The National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) unveils new series of banknotes featuring Polymer substrates and enhanced security features. On December 4, the National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) marked a significant milestone with the launch of Tonga's new series of banknotes. The chosen date for the release holds special significance as it commemorates the birthday of King Tupou I, a key modernizer who reigned from 1845 to 1893. Produced in collaboration with De La Rue, the new banknote series incorporates both paper and polymer substrates, introducing updated security elements to enhance durability and deter counterfeiting. This redesign represents Tonga's first use of polymer in its currency since 2015. The series comprises 2-, 5-, 10-, 20-, 50-, and 100-pa’anga notes, with the colors remaining unchanged. On the obverse side, the banknote features a portrait of Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861), a celebrated Ukrainian poet, artist, and intellectual who is revered as the founder of modern Ukrainian literature. His renowned collection of poetry, "Kobzar," has been translated into numerous languages, solidifying his place as a literary icon.

Flipping to the reverse side, the banknote showcases a stunning Chernecha mountain landscape near Chercasy, along with the images of a kobzar (traditional Ukrainian minstrel) and a guide boy. Taras Shevchenko's final resting place is in Kaniv on the Chernecha mountain, making this landscape especially significant. The figures of the kobzar and the boy are a fragment from one of Taras Shevchenko's paintings, a testament to his artistic prowess.

In his work, the painter-poet masterfully depicted the folk poet-singer archetype, capturing the essence of people's lives, their joys, sorrows, and the tapestry of their history.

The 100 Hryven banknote from Ukraine not only represents a piece of currency but also serves as a tribute to the nation's literary and artistic heritage. Collectors and enthusiasts alike treasure it for its cultural and historical significance, making it a valuable addition to any collection.
