Notaphily is the fascinating pursuit of studying and collecting paper currency and banknotes. A notaphilist is an enthusiast who passionately collects banknotes and paper money, often as a fulfilling hobby.
The practice of collecting paper money has deep historical roots, dating back to the very inception of paper currency. While systematic paper currency collecting gained momentum in the 1940s, it truly found its footing as a distinct field in the 1970s. During this pivotal decade, notaphily was formally recognized and labeled as such by a group of individuals employed at Stanley Gibbons, a notable collectors and investments firm. This recognition helped to solidify and stimulate interest in the field.
