Tonga Introduces New Series of Banknotes into Circulation

The National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) unveils new series of banknotes featuring Polymer substrates and enhanced security features. On December 4, the National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) marked a significant milestone with the launch of Tonga's new series of banknotes. The chosen date for the release holds special significance as it commemorates the birthday of King Tupou I, a key modernizer who reigned from 1845 to 1893. Produced in collaboration with De La Rue, the new banknote series incorporates both paper and polymer substrates, introducing updated security elements to enhance durability and deter counterfeiting. This redesign represents Tonga's first use of polymer in its currency since 2015. The series comprises 2-, 5-, 10-, 20-, 50-, and 100-pa’anga notes, with the colors remaining unchanged. The obverse side of the Lebanese 250 Livres banknote transports us to the ancient city of Tyre in south Lebanon, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its rich history and architectural marvels. The prominent feature on this side is the mesmerizing "Ruins of the Tyre Hippodrome," a structure dating back to the 2nd century CE. This historical site symbolizes the enduring legacy of Tyre and its contributions to the cultural heritage of Lebanon and the world.

Flipping the banknote reveals a scene that speaks of Lebanon's archaeological treasures. The "Qalaat Faqra," situated in Kfardebian, Lebanon, is the star of the reverse side. This archaeological site, adorned with Roman and Byzantine ruins, is nestled near the Faqra ski resort on the slopes of Mount Sannine, standing proudly at an altitude of 1500 meters. As one of the most significant sites in the UNESCO-listed Nahr al-Kalb valley, the Qalaat Faqra offers a window into Lebanon's rich past and its contributions to human history.
