Tonga Introduces New Series of Banknotes into Circulation

The National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) unveils new series of banknotes featuring Polymer substrates and enhanced security features. On December 4, the National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) marked a significant milestone with the launch of Tonga's new series of banknotes. The chosen date for the release holds special significance as it commemorates the birthday of King Tupou I, a key modernizer who reigned from 1845 to 1893. Produced in collaboration with De La Rue, the new banknote series incorporates both paper and polymer substrates, introducing updated security elements to enhance durability and deter counterfeiting. This redesign represents Tonga's first use of polymer in its currency since 2015. The series comprises 2-, 5-, 10-, 20-, 50-, and 100-pa’anga notes, with the colors remaining unchanged. This 20 Rupees banknote, issued in 2019, possesses a unique offset printing error, which adds to its rarity and collectible appeal. It has been professionally graded by PMCS as AUNC (Almost Uncirculated), receiving a grading score of 53.

Offset printing errors in banknotes can introduce various visual irregularities or imperfections during the printing process, affecting the overall appearance, alignment, or coloration. In the case of this banknote, it exhibits a reverse print on the obverse and vice versa. 

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) introduced the new series of Rs 20 banknotes in 2019, featuring the signature of RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das. The obverse of the banknote prominently showcases Mahatma Gandhi on the left, along with the Reverse Bank Seal, denomination, and Ashoka Emblem in the right corner. On the reverse side, a depiction of the Ellora Caves is featured, with Gandhi's glasses placed below the watermark window.
