Germany Democratic Republic 50 Mark 1986 P30b

East Germany, officially known as the German Democratic Republic (GDR), existed from 1949 to 1990 and was a prominent Eastern Bloc state during the Cold War. While often characterized as a communist state, it self-identified as a socialist 'workers' and peasants' state.' The GDR's existence came to an end when its states reunified with the Federal Republic of Germany in 1990.

The banknote, measuring 135 × 59 mm, was originally issued by the State Bank of the German Democratic Republic and remained in circulation until its demonetization on July 1, 1990.

The obverse side of the banknote features the striking image of Friedrich Engels, a prominent philosopher, political theorist, and co-author of 'The Communist Manifesto.' The national emblem of the German Democratic Republic, along with the banknote's denomination, is inscribed in the Deutsch (German) language, reading "State Bank of the GDR" and "Fifty Marks of the German Democratic Republic."

On the reverse, an industrial complex comes into view, celebrating the industrial and economic achievements of East Germany. The National emblem of the German Democratic Republic is prominently displayed, underscoring the state's socialist identity and values.
