The GDR's existence came to an end when its states reunified with the Federal Republic of Germany in 1990.

The obverse side of the banknote features the striking image of Friedrich Engels, a prominent philosopher, political theorist, and co-author of 'The Communist Manifesto.' The national emblem of the German Democratic Republic, along with the banknote's denomination, is inscribed in the Deutsch (German) language, reading "State Bank of the GDR" and "Fifty Marks of the German Democratic Republic."
On the reverse, an industrial complex comes into view, celebrating the industrial and economic achievements of East Germany. The National emblem of the German Democratic Republic is prominently displayed, underscoring the state's socialist identity and values.
