On December 4, the National Reserve Bank of Tonga (NRBT) marked a significant milestone with the launch of Tonga's new series of banknotes. Measuring 175 x 77 mm, the 100 Riels Banknote showcases an intricate design in brown and green, accentuated by a multicolor underprint.

On the obverse of the banknote, you'll find the Statue of Lokecvara on the left, while the reverse features a long boat, accompanied by a watermark of Buddha.

The "Statue of Lokecvara" is a prominent and revered statue, often associated with Buddhism. It may refer to a specific representation of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, who is regarded as the embodiment of compassion in Buddhist tradition. The term "Lokecvara" can be understood as a variant or transliteration of "Avalokiteshvara."

Avalokiteshvara is depicted in various forms and poses in Buddhist art and iconography, and the "Statue of Lokecvara" likely refers to one such representation of this compassionate Bodhisattva. These statues are found in Buddhist temples and shrines and hold significant cultural and religious importance in many regions where Buddhism is practiced.
